What are Biologics (Biopharmaceuticals)?
Biologics are pharmaceuticals manufactured using raw materials or components derived from humans or other living organisms, and they require special attention in terms of health and hygiene. This category includes biological products, genetically engineered medicines, cell-cultured pharmaceuticals, cell therapies, gene therapies, and other products recognized by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. In particular, Biologics can be divided into three types: novel biologics, biosimilars, and biobetters. Novel biologics are produced through the cultivation of living cells and, compared to synthetic drugs, have large molecular weights and complex high-molecular structures. What are Biosimilars?
A biosimilar is a biopharmaceutical that can be marketed once the patent of the original biologic expires. It is developed by replicating the original biologic, and its equivalence in quality as well as in non-clinical and clinical comparisons has been demonstrated.
A biobetter is an improved version of an original biologic, and unlike biosimilars, it can be granted its own patent. It has the advantage of being priced higher than the original biologic. In the current protein therapeutics market, biobetters are competing closely with original biologics, and global companies around the world continue to invest heavily in their development.
